One of the most common tanker operations performed by more than a thousand tankers that carry crude oil across the globe is the offloading of that crude. This is a delicate operation that must be overseen by specialized personnel in order to ensure that it is done safely as well as with the environment in mind. An accident, which spills crude oil into the ocean, could spell the end of a wide variety of the local marine life, as well as potential lawsuits. There is also the danger of explosions, should the tanker operations offloading plan not be followed exactly. In addition, before loading or unloading of petroleum products, there must be a loading master, a deck officer, or a Tankerman present.
